Chelsea have upperhand over Napoli in Sergio Reguilon chase
According to AS via SportWitness (h/t Mirror), Chelsea have an advantage over Napoli in the pursuit of Sergio Reguilon.
The 23-year-old Spaniard is seen as an alternative for Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell. The Foxes star is Chelsea’s top target at left-back. However, with Leicester demanding a world-record fee for him, the Blues are looking at other options.
Currently, on loan at Sevilla, the Real Madrid star has built up a reputation as a solid player. He played a starring role as Los Palanganas defeated Manchester United in the Europa League semifinals last week.
The Spaniard will now face Inter Milan in the final. According to the report, his future will be decided once the showpiece event is over.
Real for their part are open to selling the defender. Manager Zinedine Zidane is happy with Ferland Mendy and Marcelo. The La Liga giants are willing to sell Reguilon with a buy-back clause inserted.
This will give them an advantage if Reguilon develops as expected. Marcelo despite his standing is 32 and not getting any younger. In Reguilon they can bring back a player who was named as the Spanish top-flight’s best left-back.
A good deal sans the buy-back!
Italian giants Napoli are also interested in securing the 23-year-old. Reguilon however prefers a move to the Premier League handing Chelsea the advantage. (h/t Mirror)
The defender could be available for as little as €25m. While he is certainly a much cheaper option in comparison to Chilwell, the insertion of a buyback clause could prove problematic.
Having proven himself in La Liga, Reguilon’s exploits on the continent prove he can cut it at the top level. Having more European experience in comparison to Chilwell, he has every chance of upstaging the Leicester star next season.
If Chelsea can bring in Reguilon without a buyback clause, it would be well worth the risk.
