Chelsea close in on massive summer deal according to this respected journalist

Chelsea in the final stages of concluding Kai Havertz transfer

According to respected journalist Kevin Palmer, Chelsea are closing in on their third major signing of the summer.

He revealed in a tweet that the Blues are nearing the capture of German sensation Kai Havertz. The Blues and Bayer Leverkusen are in the final stages of negotiations with the focus now on the payment structure for performance-related bonuses.

The major point of contention between both clubs has been the player’s valuation. Chelsea are hoping to strike a deal in the region of £70million.

Leverkusen, on the other hand, are sticking to their valuation of £90m. If it is completed, Havertz will form a new core of attacking talents alongside Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

The trio will greatly amplify a Blues strikeforce that has at times been too reliant on Christian Pulisic.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a sensational 2019/20 campaign where he helped the German giants to fifth-place in the Bundesliga. They also made it to the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Unfortunately for them, they fell short of Champions League qualification through both avenues.

Havertz ended the season with an impressive tally of 18 goals and 9 assists from 45 matches in all competitions. If he signs, Havertz will become the third German in the Chelsea squad after Antonio Rudiger and Werner.

Despite the promise shown this season, Chelsea are still some way away from challenging for the top spot. The losses to Arsenal and Bayern Munich in the FA Cup and the Champions League made that clear.

Signing Havertz will strengthen us but need not make us a well-rounded team. This is because the defence has predominantly been our Achilles heel this season.

The Blues need to revamp their porous defence to have a better chance of challenging for the top prizes. The difference of having one is perfectly illustrated by the results of our rivals.

Of all the top teams in the Premier League, Liverpool have been successful of late due to their newfound solidity at the back. Manchester City for all their attacking prowess are susceptible at the back and the effect is clear for all to see.
