Chelsea to battle Arsenal and Man City for Sporting Lisbon prodigy Joelson Fernandes
It looks to be raining Fernandes in the Premier League. After Bruno Fernandes and Gedson Fernandes, Sporting Lisbon starlet Joelson Fernandes could become the latest in the namesake to make the move across the channel.
According to The Sun, the 17-year-old is subject of interest from Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.
Dubbed the next Cristiano Ronaldo, the youngster is a force to be reckoned with on the wing. Though right-footed, Fernandes plays predominantly off the left-hand side, with his trickery and pace proving to be potent weapons.
Fernandes made his debut for the Sporting first-team this June. He has since made three more appearances off the bench and is yet to open his account for the club. (h/t Transfermarkt)
According to the report, the youngster has a £41million release clause. Arsenal seem to be extremely interested in securing his services.
The Gunners have had two bids rejected with the latest one reported to be worth £29m. Mikel Arteta’s eagerness to land Fernandes could see Arsenal return later this week with an improved offer.
Chelsea have been in contact with the player’s representative Kia Joorabchian regarding his client’s situation. As per the report, meetings regarding Fernandes have been scheduled for the next few days.
It appears to be a matter of money, with Sporting refusing to budge on the player’s release clause being met.
Chelsea have in recent months become a hub for promising young talents to bloom. Fernandes could join a list of talented young stars with a bright future in the game.
Interest in the player is also high in Germany. Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are also in the fray for the youngster’s signature. (h/t The Sun)
