“Dead money” – PL legend believes this top Serie A star would be an expensive risk for Chelsea

Rio Ferdinand cautions Chelsea against signing Kalidou Koulibaly

Speaking on BT Sport (h/t Evening Standard), Rio Ferdinand believes Chelsea will be taking a massive gamble if they pursue Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

The 29-year-old is widely considered to be one of the top defenders in the world.

Chelsea meanwhile are in need of defensive reinforcement this summer. The club has struggled at the back all season and this has become an Achilles heel in our aim to succeed.

The deficiencies were laid bare by Bayern Munich as they romped home to a 4-1 win last night. Not only was it a humbling lesson for Chelsea but also brought the club’s 2019-20 campaign to a close.

Speaking on the issue, Ferdinand believes a move for Koulibaly might not be in Chelsea’s best interests. At 29, he is not a long-term option and will see his value depreciate once he hits his 30s.

“It’s dead money. You spend £70-80m to get him and that’s dead money, from a business perspective.”

Koulibaly has also failed to hit his usual standards this season. The Senegalese also had a night to forget against Barcelona.

He showed a lack of awareness to give away a poor penalty and looked out of sorts all game. If anything, he looked far from the imperious player that he is often depicted as.

Every transfer comes with a risk. However, given Koulibaly’s age and also his recent dip in form, Ferdinand’s assessment seems spot on. It is now up to Chelsea to decide what is best for them.

Spending big money on a single players makes sense provided he has a transformative effect on the team as a whole.

In hindsight, no one could have predicted the turnaround Virgil van Dijk brought about for Liverpool. Just two years on, the mammoth fee paid for him looks to be money well spent.

Chelsea should hope for the same if we decide to go big on a player. After all, our move for Kepa Arrizabalaga has shown us not all record transfers need be a hit.

Frank Lampard backs Kai Havertz to succeed at Chelsea

According to the Metro, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard believes it is only a matter of time before Kai Havertz makes an impact.

Signed for a massive £71million from Bayer Leverkusen, the German ace has failed to light up the game in his first two games in blue.

A rather quiet outing at the Amex Stadium was followed by the abject loss to Liverpool at the Bridge. He was taken off in the latter match at half time after Chelsea went down to 10 men.

However, it can be argued that him being taken off against Liverpool was due to Andreas Christensen’s red card. In fact, he showed flashes of his ability in the first half when he attempted to set up Timo Werner. Unfortunately, the German shot wide with the score still at 0-0.

It was suggested by Jamie Carragher after the match that Lampard could struggle to find Havert’z best position.

The Blues boss is not worried and is confident that the 21-year-old will come into his own once he gets accustomed to the Premier League.

Chelsea have had an excellent transfer window

“He needs time, Kai Havertz. He trained just a few days before Brighton, again he’s had to recover and get ready for this game.”

Havertz occupied different positions in his first two games for Chelsea. The German played a deeper role against Brighton before starting in a central role up front against Liverpool.

His quality is undoubted and it is only a matter of time before we see the best of the 21-year-old.

The loss to Liverpool was also a harsh lesson. While we may have strengthened the squad in the summer, it will take time for the players to be introduced and also gel together.

With 36 more games to go in the Premier League, there is much to be played for.

Luka Jovic rejected a chance to join Chelsea earlier this summer

According to Spanish publication AS (h/t Football.london), Real Madrid ace Luka Jovic passed on the opportunity to join Chelsea earlier this window.

The Blues were one of several clubs keen on the Serbian before we decided to sign Timo Werner.

Apart from us, the likes of Napoli, Monaco, and AC Milan were also interested in signing the striker before he chose to stay at Real Madrid. (h/t The Sun)

The 22-year-old, who joined the Spanish giants last season, has found life in the Spanish capital difficult. He has struggled on the pitch and has scored just twice in 27 appearances last season.

This measly goal contribution of 0.16 per game at Real pales in comparison to the 0.60 per game he achieved at Eintracht Frankfurt.

He has also shown the undesirable trait of being embroiled in controversies off the pitch. He received a telling off from his country’s Prime Minister after he broke lockdown protocols to fly into Serbia for a birthday party.

Bringing in a striker was paramount for the Blues this summer. While Tammy Abraham started last season as the first-choice striker, Olivier Giroud proved his worth towards the end of the season.

With Werner now a Blue, we have a truly world-class striker to lead the line as we aim for the top.

While Jovic is young and has the potential to be a prolific scorer, his off-the-field controversies are something that the club can do without.

Werner is yet to score a competitive goal for Chelsea. However, he has shown enough promise and hunger to show he can be a hit at Stamford Bridge.

We are glad to have got ourselves a player who does his talking on the pitch than off it.

English icon blames Chelsea star for a game-changing incident against Liverpool

Michael Owen believes Kepa Arrizabalaga contributed to Andreas Christensen sending off

Speaking to Premier League Productions (h/t The Mirror), Michael Owen believes Chelsea star Kepa Arrizabalaga should be held responsible for Andreas Christensen getting sent off.

Despite a number of stars missing, Chelsea competed with Liverpool on even terms. The pendulum swung in the Merseysiders’ favour when Christensen received his marching orders towards the end of the first half.

The Danish international was judged guilty of having brought down Sadio Mane after the Senegalese was put through by Jordan Henderson.

While the decision cannot be argued upon, Owen believes Kepa should also shoulder a major part of the blame.

“We hear a lot of the time about goalkeepers creating nervousness in their back four and I think that’s a perfect example.”

The Former English international’s opinion appears to have been clouded by an earlier error by the keeper.

Kepa advanced of his line earlier in the match only for Mohamed Salah to beat him to the ball. Thankfully on that occasion, Christensen was at hand to prevent Roberto Firmino from scoring.

Kepa was at fault for the second goal

“He did it earlier on in the game when he ran out of his box for no apparent reason. When your goalkeeper is nervous it runs throughout your team. He shouldn’t be running 25 yards out of his goal.”

An easy target

While Kepa can he held guilty for a number of errors including the second goal, we feel he is being made use of as an easy target.

Kepa would have in fact made it easier for Mane to run into space and adjust his bearings had he not advanced.

With the Senegalese star’s pace set to outstrip him, Christensen’s decision to put his arms around Mane proved to be an error. Initially given a yellow, the decision was turned into a red after a VAR check.

While Owen has every right to call the decision as he sees fit, we feel Kepa is at this moment of time a soft target.

The player’s confidence looks shot and his nervousness is apparent. With the Edouard Mendy deal nearing its conclusion, it remains to be seen how Kepa reacts.

Fikkayo Tomori could stay at Chelsea amidst interest from rivals

According to the Express, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has hinted that Fikayo Tomori could stay at the club this season.

The youngster was touted to secure a loan move away this summer. Interest in him was high with both Everton and Rennes keen.

The Blues boss is, however, keen to keep the 22-year-old at the club. Tomori impressed as a second-half substitute in Chelsea’s 2-0 loss at home to champions Liverpool.

This was Tomori’s first appearance since playing against Bournemouth on 29 February. It is fair to say he did well, even garnering praise from Lampard.

“Tomori did really well and he hasn’t played for a while.”

The Chelsea manager reiterated his trust in the youngster and hopes the performance will have given him much confidence.

“I hope he feels the trust in him. I have got confidence in him.”

According to the report, Tomori is behind Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger in the Chelsea pecking order.

While the former was sent off, the latter did not make the squad. Lampard later admitted that he was unable to make space for the German international. (h/t Daily Mail)

The fact that Tomori got the nod over Rudiger in such a big game could hint at a change in the pecking order at the club.

The youngster did himself no harm with yesterday’s performance though.

With Brazilian veteran Thiago Silva joining the club, Tomori will have to face more competition this season.

However, if he keeps impressing like yesterday, he will find his stock rising at Stamford Bridge.
