“A huge part of this game” – Lampard turns his attention to the transfer market after UCL exit

Frank Lampard confirms Chelsea will step up summer transfer plans

Speaking to BT Sports (h/t Evening Standard), Frank Lampard has confirmed that Chelsea will step up their summer transfer plans in the coming weeks.

This comes after the Blues brought the curtains down on their 2019-20 campaign by bowing out of the Champions League.

The game ended 4-1 in favour of Bayern Munich on the night and 7-1 on aggregates. It was a timely reminder of the gulf that exists between us and the top teams on the continent.

According to the report, Lampard is now set for talks with director Marina Granovskaia about the club’s recruitment plans and where they need to strengthen ahead of next season.

“Recruitment is a huge part of this game.”

The Blues have already brought in Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. Lampard is now keen to secure Kai Havertz while also revamping his defence. A new goalkeeper is also on the club’s agenda. (h/t Evening Standard)

The humbling to Bayern would have shown Lampard exactly what it is that the team lacks. Chelsea cannot hope to compete against the top teams unless we address the gaps in our squad.

“When you look through the team, nights like tonight in a footballing sense show me a lot.”

The Blues boss also touched upon what has been an encouraging first season at the club. For a side that is amongst the country’s best, fourth place should be a given rather than an achievement.

Lampard iterated that the club is reasonably satisfied with what they have achieved this season, given the resources. Now it is time to push on and take the next step in our evolution.

“Now is the important time to not rest, not settle with fourth and think where can we improve with the players and as a club.”
