Transfer News: Chelsea to battle Everton for 23-year-old La Liga star

Chelsea earmark Sergio Reguilon as Ben Chilwell alternative

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea are set to outbid Everton for Real Madrid defender Sergio Reguilon.

The 23-year-old is seen as an alternative for Leicester City star Ben Chilwell. The Foxes defender is Chelsea’s top target at left-back. However, with Leicester demanding a world-record fee for him, the Blues have turned their attention to Reguilon.

The Spaniard is an excellent player who has enhanced his reputation on loan at Sevilla this season. His performances saw him get named as the Spanish top-flight’s best left-back.

He made 31 appearances in La Liga for Los Palanganas this season. A player who is also capable of going forward, he scored two goals while assisting four more.

Reguilon played a key role as Sevilla eventually finish fourth in La Liga to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Everton, who have lost Leighton Baines this summer, are keen on bringing Reguildon to Merseyside. They had made a bid worth £18million last week.

Despite the 23-year-old’s performances, Real are well stacked at left-back. With a plethora of options to choose from, they are willing to sell Reguilon to balance their books.

With the club moving quickly to secure attacking reinforcements, Frank Lampard is now keen to strengthen the backline.

The left-back position is particularly in need of attention. Neither Marcos Alonso nor Emerson Palmieri has done enough to make the spot their own.

Sevilla too are keen on taking him on loan for another season. With Chelsea’s interest now piqued, it could prove to be difficult.

The Blues have spent big money to bring in Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. The spree will only increase if we eventually sign Kai Havertz.

There is no doubt Chilwell is an excellent player. It is however debatable if it is worth making him the most expensive defender in history. Reguilon has shown he has what it takes to impress at the top level. The Blues will do well to give him the chance to continue doing so.
