Not Havertz – Chelsea interested in signing 23-year-old Bundesliga midfield star

Chelsea eyeing swoop for Denis Zakaria

Speaking on the Byline Podcast (h/t Express), Bild’s Christian Falk has claimed that Chelsea are interested in making a move for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria in the summer.

The 23-year-old midfielder came through the youth ranks at Swiss club Servette and spent a couple of seasons with BSC Young Boys, before making the switch to Gladbach in 2017.

Since the move, the box-to-box midfielder has grown into one of the best in his position in the Bundesliga. He featured in 31 times across all competitions in the 2019/20 campaign, scoring and assisting two goals apiece.

His performances have led to interest from a number of clubs, with Chelsea among them, according to Christian Falk. (h/t Express)

“It’s true but Chelsea are not the only club keen. We know these clubs have shortlists and Zakaria is on the shortlist of Chelsea because he is a really good player.

Falk further went on to add that our rivals Manchester United and Manchester City are also monitoring the 23-year-old Switzerland international. (h/t Express)

“But he is also on the shortlist of United and the shortlist of City.”

Zakaria is a talented young midfielder. With Chelsea reportedly open to offloading N’Golo Kante in the summer, he could be a viable addition to the ranks. More so, considering that Jorginho, too, hasn’t been at his best for a while now.

The report further goes on to add that Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz remains Chelsea’s top target this summer. But Lampard is open to adding more quality depth to the squad, which Zakaria would provide.

However, it remains to be seen if the club has the financial muscle to make a move for the Swiss star, considering that there are a number of other positions that need to be strengthened.
