Chelsea interested in £20m rising US star impressing in the Bundesliga

Chelsea keen on £20million-rated Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie

According to CBS Sport (h/t The Sun), Chelsea are interested in signing Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie.

The 21-year-old joined the Bundesliga side from MLS side FA Dallas in 2017. He has since made 91 appearances for Meister der Herzen and has scored 5 goals and 7 assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)

A versatile player who can play in a variety of positions, McKennie has often been deployed in the middle of the park. Given the uncertainty surrounding the futures of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, bringing in the 21-year-old will provide us with able reinforcement.

Valued at a relatively modest £20million, McKennie could become the second American international to sign for the club in two years. Christian Pulisic is the other.

The midfielder has been an ever-present in the Schalke line-up this season. He made 32 appearances as the Ruhr-based side threatened to finish at the top. They did eventually fall off to finish a disappointing 12th.

According to the report, he is now ready to move to a side involved in Europe. Chelsea certainly fit the bill and also have their Champions League hopes back in their own hands.

The Blues are still reeling from a 3-0 loss at Sheffield united. This could prompt Frank Lampard to go for both McKennie and Kai Havertz.

The financial implications of the coronavirus coupled with the club’s disappointing season have seen Schalke put up some of their best players for sale. Their misery is our opportunity.

Competition for the midfielder will be high, with teams from France, Spain, and Germany also interested. (h/t The Sun)
