Chelsea risk being priced out of a deal for £60m English star

Chelsea could be priced out of a move for Declan Rice

According to the Daily Star, Chelsea could have difficulties in forking out the cash to bring back former academy star Declan Rice.

The youngster left Chelsea for West Ham in 2014. He has since developed into one of the finest young players in the country.

With him capable of playing as a centre-back, it is understandable why the Blues see him as the solution to their defensive woes.

With their Premier League future secured, the Hammers are not keen to part with their prized gem. Any move will see Chelsea fork out a fee close to £60million.

With other positions needing reinforcements, Chelsea could find it difficult to match Rice’s asking price. The blow could however be parried if one takes into account a youngster already on Chelsea’s books.

Ethan Ampadu is capable of playing in both defensive midfield and central defence. His strengths also mirror that of rice, with him being able to read the game, tackle and recycle possession seamlessly.

Still just 19, the Welshman has impressed while on loan at RB Leipzig. He has not only gained valuable experience but also showed his capabilities as the Germans put Tottenham Hotspur to the sword in the Champions League.

Ampadu made just seven appearances all season. However, it gave us a clear idea that the player is indeed destined for the top. If Chelsea miss out on Rice, that process could be speeded up.

In Lampard, he has a manager who rates him highly. The Blues boss tried to sign him on loan when in charge of Derby County.

Six years ago, Chelsea showed a lack of foresight when they let go of Rice. This summer, they can do the opposite by keeping faith in Ampadu.
