Chelsea could turn to the Bundesliga yet again to address key squad position

Chelsea to compete against Arsenal for Matthias Ginter

According to Sky Sports Germany (h/t Metro), Chelsea have entered the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter.

The 26-year-old German international is coming off an excellent season for Die Fohlen. He played a crucial role as Gladbach finished in the top four and qualified for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The Blues will, however, face competition from the likes of Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Arsenal.

With him in his final year of the contract, Chelsea has enquired about the possibility of signing him on a free transfer next summer.

According to the report, Ginter’s contract will automatically renew if he makes more than 25 appearances for Gladbach in the upcoming campaign.

Given his importance in the team, it is more than likely that he will easily achieve the number. For the context, the German international has made 36 appearances this season. He also missed five games due to injury. Monchengladbach, for their part, are readying a contract extension.

Chelsea’s defensive struggles are well known. No top-10 Premier League club has conceded more league goals than us this season.
