27-year-old Chelsea outcast set for Stamford Bridge exit despite signing new contract

Marco van Ginkel expected to be loaned out next season

It is easy to forget that Dutch midfielder Marco van Ginkel is still a Chelsea player.

The 27-year-old has featured just four times for the club since joining in 2013. Nicknamed the next Frank Lampard, the youngster arrived at Stamford Bridge as the reigning Dutch Talent of the Year.

Much was expected of the player when he made his move to Stamford Bridge. Injuries have a funny way of ruining what could have been a special career.

Out injured for two years now, the Dutchman’s contract was supposed to expire this summer. Chelsea have, however, offered him a new lease of life and extended his stay by another year.

Van Ginkel lead PSV to the Eredivisie title in 2018

Whether that time is in London or not remains to be seen. According to Ziggo Sport (h/t Express), Van Ginkel believes he will be sent out on loan next season.

“To hook [my hopes] on that [playing for the first team] now seems a bit premature. So I will be loaned out.”

In hindsight, it may prove to be the best decision for him given the need for him to resurrect his career. It is unlikely that he will get the requisite playing time at the Bridge given the players available to Lampard.

Being away from the limelight could also help him rebuild what was once an extremely promising career.

Marco van Ginkel expects to be loaned out next season

Van Ginkel has had three loan spells since joining Chelsea. Spells at AC Milan and Stoke City were promising but failed to take off.

It was back in his homeland with PSV Eindhoven that the Dutchman displayed a resurgence. He scored 31 goals and made 10 assists in 64 games during his two-year spell at the Philips Stadion. (h/t Transfermarkt)

It is also a testament to his leadership abilities that he was made the captain at PSV, the team he led to the Eredivisie title in 2018. (h/t Mirror)

There appear to be teams who are still willing to take a chance on him. The Dutchman confirmed that was the case, with PSV also among them. (h/t Express)

Van Ginkel is an excellent player who can yet go on to have a successful career. A loan spell will give us the chance to properly assess him and see if he still has a future at the bridge.
