Chelsea to bring in new goalkeeper irrespective of Kepa Arrizabalaga’s fate
According to the Telegraph (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea are keen to bring in a new keeper even if they cannot sell Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The Blues number one watched on from the stands as reserve keeper Willy Caballero took the reins in the FA Cup semifinal win over Manchester United.
It is not the first time that the Argentine custodian has replaced the Spaniard in goal. Manager Frank Lampard had done the same earlier this year.
According to the report, the Blues boss lacks faith in his keeper and is drawing up a list of potential candidates to replace him.
The list will be created by Chelsea’s technical and performance director Petr Cech and former goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon, who is now a part of the Blues’ scouting setup.
Cech and Lollichon will create two separate lists of goalkeeper targets – one if they manage to raise funds by selling Kepa and one if they cannot.
The 25-year-old is expected to return to action against Liverpool at Anfield later this week. Kepa had played a crucial role in Chelsea defeating Liverpool in the FA Cup in March. He could once again cement his place as the number one in the same fixture.
The most expensive keeper in the world, Kepa has failed to do justice to the faith shown in him by the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.
A new keeper will be the club’s third signing of the window. The Blues moved quickly to secure the signings of both Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.
The Blues are building a meaner attack for next season, but questions regarding the defence still persist.
