“It hurts me” – Chelsea new boy opens up on controversial choice to opt-out of UCL

Timo Werner breaks his silence over Chelsea move

According to Sportbuzzer (h/t Football.london), inbound Chelsea striker Timo Werner has defended his decision to cut short his role in RB Leipzig’s Champions League campaign.

The 24-year-old capped off his final season in the Bundesliga with a brace against Augsburg. However, the Germans will resume their European campaign later this year.

They will however have to do it sans their star striker. The German ace is keen to link up with his Chelsea teammates and will officially join the club on July 1.

Werner has expressed his disappointment at being unable to help his current teammates out.

“Of course it hurts me that I can’t help out [RB Leipzig] to play in the Champions League.”

However, he believes it would be unfair on Chelsea, the club that pays him, if he plays for another team after officially joining the side.

“But I’m a Chelsea FC player from July 1st and I’m being paid by Chelsea from then on.”

The Blues still have seven more games to go in the Premier League. We are in the semi-finals of the FA Cup but face an uphill task against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Although he can not help us this term, training alongside the team should get him in sync with our style. This will help him settle in and wreak havoc next season.

We are glad Werner is keen to start his career at the Bridge as soon as possible. Although we wouldn’t want to be in Leipzig’s shoes, the player’s sentiments have to take the precedence here.

The Blues have shown promise this season. This is, however, not enough to compete against Liverpool and Manchester City. With the addition of Werner, we will have a better chance of upsetting the applecart.
