Former Chelsea star endorses club’s pursuit of £75million English star

Joe Cole backs Chelsea interest in Ben Chilwell

According to the Metro, former Chelsea star and BT Sport pundit Joe Cole believes that Frank Lampard is right in chasing the signature of Ben Chilwell.

The 23-year-old has played a key role in Leicester City’s rise under Brendan Rodgers. With the Foxes closing in on Champions League qualification, Chilwell is one of the many players garnering attention.

“Similar to Werner, he fits the ethos – he is young, he’s hungry, he’s explosive and athletic.”

A young player who is an explosive presence down the flank, Cole has likened him to new signing Timo Werner. The former Chelsea star is convinced that Chilwell fits in well with the ethos of the club.

The Blues view him as the priority target for filling the left-back position as we aim to bring back the glory days to the Bridge. Valued at a mammoth £75million, he will prove to be a significant investment.

Cole believes that the player will indeed solve the club’s woes in the position and occupy it for years to come.

“If he does come to Chelsea, Chelsea’s left-back for many years. He’s a terrific player, a real talent.”

The club is however confident that the lure of Champions League football will be enough to convince Chilwell to join. This is provided we meet Leicester’s asking price.

It can be argued that the Foxes are above us and can potentially also offer the same next season. But given our ambitious transfer activity, we should have enough quality to outdo them and challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City soon.

Chilwell gave a good account of his attacking prowess at the weekend against Watford. He scored a cracker as the Foxes drew 1-1 with the Hornets.

Excellent both in the attack and the defence, Chilwell has scored three goals and assisted four more in 29 appearances this season. (h/t Transfermarkt)
