Paul Merson backs Timo Werner to lead Chelsea to glory
Writing in his column for StarSport (h/t Metro), Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes signing Timo Werner is a gamechanger for Chelsea.
The German ace is on his way to Stamford Bridge after the Blues agreed to pay his release clause. Having looked destined to join Liverpool, our acquisition of the 24-year-old is nothing short of a coup.
Werner has scored 92 goals in 156 appearances for Leipzig and is one of the deadliest strikers in European football. His goals have helped the Germans climb to third place in the Bundesliga while also qualifying for the Champions League quarterfinals.
“Signing Timo Werner shows Chelsea are back – and I’d be shocked if they don’t win the league in the next four years now.”
Merson believes the transfer also shows the shrewdness of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. The Russian oligarch has taken advantage of the lull in transfer activity to steal a match on his rivals.
“He’s a winner. He wants Chelsea to be a threat again. And he’s realized if he spends now, they have a chance to close the gap. I think it’s clever.”
Merson believes Chelsea are primed to challenge the top sides once again for dominance.
Liverpool and Manchester City are currently the best teams in the country and among the best on the continent. Challenging them is no easy feat given the players at their disposal. However, Chelsea can close the gap if the new additions step up as expected.

We believe that the Blues still have some way to go before usurping Liverpool and Manchester City. Not only do they have good players, but also a system that helps get the best of their resources.
Signing players alone will not make us better. We will have to ensure the system plays to their strengths and maximizes their potential.
Chelsea have shown ambition in the transfer market. Hopefully, Merson ‘s words will come true.
