PL rivals eye a move for 29-year-old Chelsea star

Newcastle United keen on Chelsea star Marcos Alonso

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are interested in Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso.

The Magpies are close to completing their potential takeover. The new owners will be keen to make a splash and have identified Alonso as one of their targets.

The 29-year-old’s future at Stamford Bridge is in question, with him looking likely to move on in the summer. A marauding left-back with an eye for goal, Alonso is a threat down the flank.

Brought in by Antonio Conte, he has made 140 appearances for the Blues and has scored 22 goals and 17 assists. (h/t Transfermarkt) The Spaniard has made just 20 appearances this season. He enjoyed a resurgence of sorts just before the suspension of the league season.

He scored three goals in his last three games including the winner against Tottenham Hotspur and a match-saving brace against Bournemouth. It has ensured that the Blues have stayed in 4th position, on course for Champions League qualification.

He has three years left on his contract and will cost around £26million. It will see us sell a player nearing 30 for a profit in what is a tough time financially for the sport.

A move to Tyneside will not be something new to Alonso, having played for Newcastle’s arch-rivals Sunderland in 2014. The affiliation saw him get booed and jeered in our trip to the Sports Direct earlier Arena this season.

Frank Lampard is keen to strengthen the left side of his defence by bringing in Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell. He is keen to move on both Alonso and Emerson Palmieri to bring in the young Englishman. (h/t Daily Mail)

According to the report, Lampard does not favour the Spaniard. His departure, however, will depend on the club’s ability to bring in a new left-back.

A player with considerable experience in the English game, Alonso has also played for Bolton Wanderers in his career.

With him set to turn 30 this year, the Blues will do well to get a decent fee for him this summer. Although it can be argued that we will be worse off without his attacking output, the additions of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech should help overcome the deficit.
