Former PL star warns Chelsea regarding the signing of Bundesliga hotshot

Tammy Abraham tipped to play in a new position, thanks to Timo Werner

Speaking to Football.london (h/t Express), Jamie Redknapp believes Tammy Abraham will have to change his position in order to accommodate Timo Werner.

Chelsea pulled off a coup to land the prolific German, who is also one of the most sought after strikers in world football.

This has, however, led to questions regarding the development of Abraham. The youngster is the club’s top scorer and has enjoyed an excellent breakout season in the English top-flight.

Tammy Abraham could be forced out wide to accomodate Timo Werner
Chelsea have been heavily reliant on Tammy Abraham for goals this season

Redknapp believes the 24-year-old’s arrival could see Abraham forced into a wide position in Lampard’s 4-3-3 setup.

“Tammy has done well upfront, but he can play in any of the three front positions.”

He was full of praise for the squad being assembled by Lampard. A youth-centric team has been further strengthened by the additions of Hakim Ziyech and now Werner.

“They have got Ziyech as well and he looks like a really good signing as well. Frank is building a really good, young side.”

Abraham is just one of the many youngsters who have become household names under Lampard. The 22-year-old came through the Chelsea youth ranks and leads the club’s scoring charts with 15 goals, more than twice that of Willian in second place.

Timo Werner has been a major target for Chelsea
Timo Werner is a more accomplished striker than Abraham

Werner is a much more prolific striker who is at this point of time a much better option than Abraham. Not only is he a scorer but he also creates nuisance with his off-the-ball movement.

It is difficult to see Abraham get picked over Werner, however, it could be possible for them to co-exist. If putting the youngster out wide is what is required, then so be it.

Although Abraham has a long way to go, he has shown enough promise that he could become an excellent forward for us. Hopefully, signing Werner will not set back his development.
