Chelsea were in advanced talks to sign Alisson Becker from Roma
According to the Athletic (h/t Mirror), Chelsea were involved in advanced negotiations with Alisson Becker before he made a record-breaking transfer to Liverpool last summer.
That record did not last long as we broke it soon after by signing Kepa Arizzabalaga from Atheltic Bilbao.
It is a case of what might have been as Alisson has gone on to establish himself as the world’s best while Kepa has largely failed to live up to his price tag.
According to the report, the Blues hesitated to make the push as they believed they could persuade Thibaut Courtois to stay put.
Ironically, not only did the Belgian end up moving to Real Madrid, but we also wound up losing Alisson to Liverpool.
The player was also keen on a switch to Stamford Bridge before we took our eyes off the ball, something that Kepa too has been guilty of in our colours.
The Spaniard has had a number of high-profile mistakes this season. It has seen Frank Lampard relegate him to the bench in favour of reserve shot-stopper Willy Caballero.
Alisson went on to receive a number of collective and individual awards as he went on to transform a stellar Liverpool defence.
The Brazilian starred in the Champions League final and also helped Brazil win the Copa America. He was decorated as the first recipient of the Yachine award last year, given to the world’s best goalkeeper.
The Blues could be set to sign a new number one in the summer, with the likes of Manuel Neuer and Nick Pope among those linked.
