Former Liverpool player and manager Graeme Souness has tipped Chelsea to make a shock move for Manchester United keeper David de Gea, according to The Metro.
The world-record transfer of Kepa Arizzabalaga has not worked out according to plan and Frank Lampard has benched the Spaniard in favour of Willy Caballero.
De Gea has been a mainstay in the United goal for almost a decade. He has not enjoyed the best of seasons this time around amidst suggestions that he could leave the club in the summer.
The 29-year-old enjoyed another frustrating evening at Goodison Park as his mistake gifted Everton an early goal.
Speaking after the match, Souness suggested that Chelsea may choose to sign the keeper in the summer.
United loanee Dean Henderson has enjoyed an excellent spell at Sheffield United and is seen as the long term heir to De Gea at Old Trafford.
Souness believes that the youngster’s emergence can throw into question De Gea’s position in the starting XI.
The Scotsman goes on to say that the United number one will not be short of suitors.
He went on to add that Ole Gunnar Solksjaer will have to make a big call regarding the goalkeeping conundrum at United.
“It’s a big decision for Ole to make”
The Spaniard is one of the league’s best goalkeepers and has shown the ability to perform at the highest level consistently. His familiarity and proved track record with the league would also be an added bonus for Lampard if he chooses to make the move.
