The 24-year-old, who signed with Bournemouth from Chelsea, has a buy-back clause in his contract that the Blues had been keen to activate.

Ake is a Chelsea youth product who joined the club’s academy from Feyenoord in 2011. He has made 17 appearances for the Blues before moving permanently to the south coast in 2017.

The defender has impressed at Bournemouth and is a vital cog in Eddie Howe’s defence.

Frank Lampard is in the market for a centre-back this month and has had the Dutchman scouted by Chelsea since the beginning of the season.

The scouting reports have reportedly raised concerns about the player’s ability to play in a high defensive line as favoured by Lampard.

Bournemouth are in a downward spiral and have lost 9 of their last 11 matches in the Premier League. Ake has started 6 of the losses, further calling into question his abilities.

The player has a buyback clause worth £40million, with the Blues also holding the rights to the first refusal.

It is possible that Chelsea may still try to sign Ake, given the ease in doing so. It, however, remains to be seen if they will proceed with interest or not.

The Blues have also been linked with a £50million bid for Brighton and Hove Albion’s Lewis Dunk.
