Olivier Giroud has penned a contract extension which will keep him as a Chelsea player until the end of next season, according to BBC.
The 32-year-old had his contract expiring this summer, which would have let him become a free agent. Furthermore, Giroud was linked with a move to Ligue 1 side Bordeaux and now he has cleared the air on his future.
Following the signing, he told,
“I am very happy to sign a new contract. I really wanted to stay at least one more year,” he said.
“I have felt a part of the team, the family, since the beginning and hopefully there will be more trophies to come.”
Giroud has been dormant in the Premier League this season while his stats were phenomenal in the Europa League, scoring 10 goals in 13 games. He scored a notable hat-trick against Dynamo Kyiv in the knock out phase.
The French star joined the Blues from fellow London rivals Arsenal last year. He was also a part of the French side that lifted the FIFA World Cup in 2018.
Giroud often found himself as an occasional starter under Maurizio Sarri, who relied too much on Gonzalo Higuain.
The Argentine striker was bought on a season-long loan from Juventus and failed to make the desired impact. Sarri’s men will face the Gunners in the Europa League final later this month.
