Chelsea veteran open to exiting the club in January window

Gary Cahill

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill is ready to leave the club in the winter window, according to the Sun (h/t Metro).

The 32-year-old hasn’t featured in any of our games this season under Maurizio Sarri. The Italian has switched to a back-four this season with David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger starring as our central defenders.

The report adds that Cahill and Andreas Christensen are considered as backup options. The report claims that Cahill is open to joining another Premier League side in the winter window and is hopeful that the Blues will not block a move for the Englishman.

Cahill will be out of contract at Chelsea at the end of the season, as per the report, and letting him join another Premier League club in the winter window could get us some cash, at least.

However, selling Cahill without bringing in a replacement could hurt us post the winter window. We do not have a lot of cover for our first-choice pairing and Cahill can do a decent job if required.

The 32-year-old isn’t the youngest defender at the club and we must think about phasing him out slowly from the side.

Cahill has been a decent buy for us since his move from Bolton and still has some quality football left in him.
