Conte’s latest on Luiz, Courtois, Barkley and Christensen ahead of huge Tottenham clash

Antonio Conte

Today’s is a clash that can either keep us in the Champions League places or doom us into Europa League oblivion. Tottenham are five points clear of Chelsea in the Premier League and a loss will be a huge blow.

A major concern for the side would be the fitness of a couple of our key players, Andreas Christensen and Thibaut Courtois, as both players were sent back to the club while on national duty.

Antonio Conte was speaking to the press and it all started off with him talking about Courtois and Christensen being alright or not.

The Chelsea boss was quoted by Football.London as saying:

“We have to check very well these couple of situations, Courtois and Christensen. We will see which is the physical condition and if they can play against Tottenham. Now it is very difficult for me to tell you with accuracy.”

There was an update on Ross Barkley too, as the boss stated that the former Everton man would be playing with the U23s on Saturday and is having training sessions now.

The manager was also asked about the last time Spurs won at Stamford Bridge, which was in 1990.

“No, I must be honest. It is a long time. For sure I remember two years ago that Spurs risked to break this situation because they were winning 2-0 and then Chelsea were very good to come back 2-2.

“We are talking about a really good team, good manager and many talented players in this team. I have a great respect for Tottenham because in these years they grew a lot and are one of the best teams in England.”

The fear of missing out on Champions League is immense and when Conte was asked if this was a must-win game, the boss added that it is an important game and the target is to reach the Champions League.

“It is an important game. Our target is to reach the CL and then the final of the FA Cup. This is our targets and Sunday is an important game. If we win we go close to Tottenham, if we don’t then not so close with seven games.”

David Luiz

However, the boss claimed that nothing is impossible and we still could put a run together and win every game from now.

Conte added that David Luiz is out for three weeks and our other option is to play Gary Cahill at the back, who he trusts.

The manager also spoke about Alvaro Morata, who is fit and ready to fire for us.

“This period was very important for Alvaro. He has worked very well and he needed to work hard. He was out for one month and a half with his back problem. Now he is really fit, 100% and ready to have a final end to the season for Chelsea and then for him to have a chance for the World Cup.”

Conte did not open up about our keeper’s contract issue and said that it is up to the club to find a “good solution”. He concluded by claiming that Spurs are a good side even without Harry Kane.
