Chelsea have reportedly been handed a boost in their pursuit of Juventus left-back Alex Sandro. Head coach Antonio Conte made Sandro one of his top summer targets but was unable to land the defender when Juventus refused to budge on their £80million asking price. But according to The Telegraph, the Turin club may now be forced to sell Sandro after the 26-year-old made it apparent that he wants to leave the club.
That means he may now be available for around £50million, which would alert the Premier League champions, possibly in the upcoming January transfer window as Conte looks to add a left full-back.
It may also depend on the Italian giants as they’d have the choice to sell/retain him in January rather than next summer, depending on whether or not they can line up a replacement.
Chelsea are looking to solidify the left-back position, where Marcos Alonso has been forced to play in almost every game. Conte does not have any cover for senior left-back Alonso and any significant injury to the Spaniard will mean our manager would be forced to ask Baba Rahman and Kenedy to step up, in which he clearly isn’t interested in doing.
Therefore, our gaffer sees the position as one of his number one priorities to strengthen as we are currently participating in the Champions League and EFL Cup apart from Premier League, with FA Cup to follow from the New Year as well.
Sandro is rated as one of the best left-backs in the world, but has suffered a dip in form this season since Chelsea’s interest was rebuffed during the summer.
However, Juventus director Beppe Marotta has suggested he will not stand in any player’s way and that Sandro’s loss in form is down to the player’s personal issues and not Chelsea’s interest.
“We have said many times that when a player asks to be sold, regardless of prestige or importance within the team, we are in favour of a sale,” Marotta was quoted in a report by Daily Mail.
“When a player is unsatisfied, it is better to let him go. In the case of Alex Sandro, he was in full agreement with the idea of remaining with us.
“His performances are down to his own personal issues that we won’t go into here,” he added.
It is important that we sign Alex Sandro or any left-back for that matter, as Alonso needs protection and competition to continue at his best.
