Here’s How We Rate The Chelsea Players From The 1-0 Win vs Southampton; Alonso 8/10, Hazard 7/10

Full Time: Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

Chelsea kept their chase for the second spot in the Premier League after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Southampton. Marcos Alonso was the unlikely game-winner for us as he scored an inch-perfect free-kick on the stroke of half-time and ensured we kept the pressure on Manchester United.

There was a different role for Eden Hazard as he played mostly down the middle of the attack in place of Alvaro Morata.

Southampton tried their best but they just could not get that extra bit of luck which would have got them the equaliser. We would be playing against Bournemouth next in the League Cup quarter-final in midweek but before that, here are the player ratings from the win at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea Player Ratings

Thibaut Courtois – 7/10

Courtois was actually tested a couple of times and did very well to keep a clean sheet against a resilient Southampton side.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 7/10

Another game where he didn’t put a foot wrong and this was one of those games where everything went alright for him.

Andreas Christensen – 7/10

It was a surprise seeing Christensen stay in the starting XI but the youngster did pretty well in the game and kept Manolo Gabbiadini in his pocket.

Gary Cahill – 6.5/10

Cahill was rested in our last game and it was no surprise that he came back into the side for this game. The Englishman had a decent enough game and even saved our skin when he cleared Ryan Bertrand’s cross.

Victor Moses – 6/10

Moses didn’t have the best game of the season as he had to deal with the wily Bertrand. Did his job well though.

Tiemoue Bakayoko – 7/10

Another positive display from the summer signing. Bakayoko might not have scored but he was energetic in midfield and did have a couple of good chances to score.

N’Golo Kante – 6.5/10

Kante did make one mistake in the match but that didn’t prove to be too costly for us. Still, the Frenchman had a good game and even had a shot on goal.

Marcos Alonso – 8/10

A great performance from Alonso as he got the only goal of the game. He spent more time attacking than defending and made Southampton pay.

Willian – 5/10

The Brazilian didn’t have the greatest of games, to be honest, and should have been subbed off as he just couldn’t get things done in the second half.

Pedro – 7.5/10

Pedro was great as he moved around menacingly in the final third. He even hit the post with an effort in the first-half.

Eden Hazard – 7/10

Hazard played as the central striker once again and didn’t actually get to do a lot in the attack. He did win us the free-kick that led to the goal but that was about it from the Belgian.

Cesc Fabregas – 7

Came on for Pedro in the 68th minute and immediately made an impact by combining with Eden Hazard for a goal that was ruled out for offside. He then dribbled past Southampton defenders brilliantly, only for the Saints to scramble the ball away to safety.

Alvaro Morata – N/A

The Spaniard did not start but he did have one good chance late in the game but shot straight at Fraser Forster.

Davide Zappacosta – N/A

Zappacosta came on for Moses but didn’t have enough time to make a difference.
