Spanish daily AS reports that Charly Musonda is nearing a permanent return to Chelsea this week as his temporary stay at Real Betis is close to an end. There are 38 players out on loan from the London club and the 20-year-old is one of the most talked about.

Musonda had an impressive loan spell in the second period of the previous campaign at the same club as he helped his side to stay clear of relegation. Despite garnering attention for a host of clubs in the previous summer, all three parties stuck to their guns to extend his time in La Liga. Surprisingly, he failed to continue his rich vein of form and it cost him his spot in the starting XI.

Then-manager, Gustavo Poyet limited his playing minute as the Belgian made a minimal impact on the pitch. What further derailed his progress is a knee injury back in October. He was forced to return to his parent club for medical purpose. When he got back to Real Betis close to a month later, Poyet was dismissed and the job was bagged by Victor Sanchez del Amo. The change in manager did not change his fortune as he only registered 278 minutes of league action this term.

The midfielder is being assessed by the medical team at Stamford Bridge following the recurrence of his knee injury. Whatever the results may be, the Spanish publication states that returning to Real Betis is highly unlikely. Moreover, unraveling him from the squad makes space for other players to join in the summer as the Real Betis’ new boss is interested in fortifying his backline with a centre-back.

His club career path could be a little wobbly yet Musonda has been an influential figure for his national team, racking up appearances since the Under-15. He caught the eyes of Europe top guns such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City yet Chelsea were quick enough to secure a deal for the youngster. He quickly settled in, reaping up positive reviews with the Under-18 team and he went on to sign a professional contract with the club.

Another eye-catching attribute is his versatility. Besides bombarding along the flanks, he can also be employed as an attacking midfielder. However, Antonio Conte is currently fielding a well-oiled squad with great prospects of clinching the Premier League title, thus chances to break into the first team for the Belgian is simply next to nothing.

Besides that, Musonda has never spoken to the new boss.

“There’s feedback with people from Chelsea,” the Belgian said.

I’ve never actually been in direct contact with Antonio Conte, but the club are keeping an eye on their players’ performances.

“My dream is to play in the Premier League, I’m going to continue my efforts to reach that objective.”

Another loan spell is on the cards and most probably it’s time for him to stock up some Premier League experience to enhance his CV.

The whiz kid should be more focused on returning fresher and fitter at the moment while Chelsea will be searching a closer second home for him in coming transfer window.
