A Shift To Three-Man Defence? 3 Reasons Why David Luiz To Chelsea Makes Sense

Better late than never! The London club Chelsea have completed some much-needed transfers during the closing stages of the window. As soon as the manager arrived at the Stamford Bridge, he brought in the Belgian sensation Michy Batshuayi from Marseille and soon after that, the signing of N’Golo Kante from Leicester City shocked the spectators.

It seemed like that was it, but after analysing a couple of games, the manager showed his desire to sign some defensive prospects and even tried to lure a couple of names from Serie A, but the plan didn’t work out. Until yesterday, the team was settled with those two signings and at the last moment, the manager somehow managed to grab two defensive names.

The former Sunderland and Bolton defender Marcos Alonso arrived at the Stamford Bridge from Fiorentina for a reported fee of £24m, and on the other hand, they brought back their former defender David Luiz from the French champions PSG. The blues made a huge profit in the deal as they sold him to PSG for a fee of £50m two years ago, and brought him back in just a fee of around £30m.

With the deal being done, it is safe to say that Chelsea’s defensive pack is more than done and Antonio Conte has got what he wanted. So here are three reasons why David Luiz’s move to Chelsea makes pure sense:

  1. Urgency-

The Blues kicked their new Premier League campaign in style and have picked up all the points possible in the opening three fixtures. Undoubtedly, the attack is going to be a threat as the players like Hazard, Costa and others are regaining their form, but the concern for the Italian gaffer was the defence.

Terry signed a new contract earlier this summer, but let’s face it; he isn’t getting any younger and is also losing his magic. On the other hand, Zouma is still recovering from his injury and Cahill has been a constant victim of inconsistency, therefore a buying a solid centre back was an urgency. As mentioned before, the manager tried to sign a few players from Serie A, but nothing materialized and now, the void has been filled.

  1. A Fan Favourite-

David Luiz arrived at the Stamford Bridge back in January 2011 from the Portuguese side Benfica and soon after his arrival, he cemented his place in the lineup and also in the minds of the spectators as he made 12 Premier league appearances and went on to score two goals. In his second game for the club, the Brazilian international got the man of the match award and he further helped his side in many crucial games.

He scored his first goal against Manchester United and helped them to win the game by 2-1 and also scored a wonderful headed goal against Manchester City as the Blues defeated the Citizens by two goals to nil. Not just on the field, the Brazilian defenders earned his way into the hearts of the supporters with his off the field antiques.

  1. A perfect Conte Man-

A strong and well-organized defence is what Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is known for. During his time with the Serie A outfit Juventus, the Italian gaffer laid a firm defensive foundation which was very stiff to break and the same kind is expected at the Stamford Bridge. Unlike Terry and Ivanovic, the Brazilian defender has good ball-playing skills that make him a perfect Conte man. Maybe a shift to 3-man defence is now a big possibility with Luiz taking a similar role what Chiellini did at Juventus when Conte was their manager.

The Brazilian is dedicated towards the sport (not saying the others aren’t) and can solely provide a completely different dimension to Chelsea’s defence. He has marked many heroic performances for every club he has spent time with and we personally believe that he could really be the Giorgio Chiellini for Antonio Conte at the Stamford Bridge.
