Forget Stones, Why Chelsea Can Be Better Off With This German Defender

Every Chelsea fan will watch the Euros minutely to have a first hand view of the new manager’s tactics in his stint with the Italian national team. The blues are going to have a complete change of ideologies and strategies and the Euros are a great medium to get used to Conte’s tactics. Expectations are sky-high from the Italian and though he seems to be the best man for the job, he faces his toughest task of his career and the Premier League has seen many greats of the game fail so Conte has to device a system that can yield results on a regular basis.

Conte has stated in an interview recently that he would play three at the back at some point in the season and that is the one area the blues need strengthening. Not that Chelsea lack in numbers, but surely they do with quality. Kurt Zouma has impressed, but Gary Cahill has had a dip in form and faces a question over his future under the Italian. John Terry lacks in pace and has to be with a center back that can cover a lot of ground.

One name that has come up to be linked with the club is the 23 year old Roma defender, Antonio Rudiger. The German has been at the club for a season on loan but at a right price, Roma will be willing to sell the talented centre back. Another option and a long term target has been Everton’s John Stones but Rudiger seems to be a better option than the youngster as he is way too inconsistent and the blues cannot afford the errors that he commits while being in dangerous situations.

Rudiger is also a ball playing defender and has some tricks in his sleeve that are unheard for a center back. His positional play is exceptional and his understanding of the game is far ahead than his age suggests. He will also won’t come costly and can be a crucial player for the blues in the future. With a passing percentage of 84, he can form a stellar partnership with Zouma in a back four and with him, Terry and Zouma, a solid back three will be present at Stamford Bridge who can keep a mean defense for the blues and a strong defense unit which is a main aspect of any Antonio Conte team.
