When people think of Chelsea, the first player that will come to mind will always be John Terry. Terry is Mr. Chelsea after all. The club has won 22 major trophies since 1905 and Terry had his hands on 14 of them. The club actually made a good decision of giving a one year contract to the Captain which will be a bonus for the incoming Antonio Conte.
The one club man needs to end his career at Stamford Bridge and the board has done that by offering him a new contract and not repeating the mistake done to Frank Lampard. Every club need leaders in the dressing room to guide the team in difficult times and the blues lacked this in this disastrous season. Any fan would bet for their life that the blues wouldn’t have finished tenth if Chelsea had true leaders and legends like Lampard and Drogba.
Those were a rare breed of players and they shouldn’t have been asked to leave the club and should have been included in the coaching staff and also to coach the kids. Same should be done with John Terry and it will be a huge advantage for Conte to have the 35 year old in his squad in his first year in London.
After playing every game in the title winning season, Terry appeared jaded and tired this campaign which resulted in his criticism. Agreed! He was not at his best, but he is still the best that the blues have their disposal. Chelsea have another exciting centre back in Kurt Zouma, and the Frenchman will improve many folds under John Terry.
Terry doesn’t have too many years left in him and will play mostly 2 more years at the highest level. Chelsea should make full use of it and sign a young centre back with world class potential to work under Conte and especially learn from the master itself, Terry. A player like John Stones would be a perfect addition to this Chelsea squad.
Stones has all the qualities to succeed at the highest level and is projected as the next England star. He is a rare breed of ball playing centre back but has looked nervous at times at the basic things. He has made stupid errors which have led to a goal and under the watchful eye of John Terry, Stones can become a world class defender which will benefit both Chelsea and England.
