The 2015-16 season finally came to an end and it might be seen as a relief for the blues faithful as this was a disappointing season on all sorts for Chelsea. From the worst defense of a league title to the sacking of the most successful manager in the club’s history and to the fall from grace of last campaign’s player of the year, the fans have seen it all this season. This season will get removed from the fans’ memory easily by everyone related to the club and the future under Antonio Conte seems to be better with the new influx of players and better challenge on all fronts.
The season started on a wrong note with the Eva Carneiro row in the first game of the season. From there, the downfall of Jose Mourinho and subsequently Chelsea started. It just didn’t work for the Special One this campaign and was sacked before Christmas and was replaced by the calm and collected Guus Hiddink for the remaining of the season. The Dutchman stabilizes the club, but the results didn’t improve as much and the blues ended the season on a lowly tenth.
Cup competitions also didn’t bring much joy and the blues went trophyless but there were some positives too with the emergence of youth into the first team squad like Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Bertrand Traore. The main concern for the new manager will be to keep hold of the Legend John Terry at all costs, though he is not the same Terry that was years ago, but still the blues need his leadership and experience to strike back next season. Let’s take a look the best performers of this season :
5. Kurt Zouma:
Though the young Frenchman has not played since February after injuring his cruciate ligaments, he was one of the shining lights of the blues’ horrific season. He has arrived at the big stage and a lot is expected from him next campaign. Zouma and Terry can be the way forward for Conte’s first season at Stamford Bridge.
4. Diego Costa:
The mercurial has played well in patches and is the blues’ top scorer this campaign with 16 goals. He received his first red card against Everton and was rightly suspended for three games, but whenever he has played, the Spaniard has given his all for the team even when in a lost cause.
3. Cesc Fabregas:
Fabregas was average till Christmas, but since the turn of the new year has remained his touch and found his mojo back. He is emerging as a leader for the blues and is termed as the future Chelsea captain. His three assists in the game against Bournemouth was his highlight of the season.
2. Cesar Azpilicueta:
Azpilicueta has been consistent since signing for the blues and this season too he has not disappointed. His defending is impeccable at times and he has improved on his attacking too. The Spaniard gave many assists and has impressed be at left back or at right back.
1. Willian:
Chelsea’s player of the season played a crucial part in winning many games and some were even won single handedly by the Brazilian. Fiery pace, immense work rate, tremendous passing coupled with a new found set piece’s ability resulted in 11 goals and 7 assists for the winner who was rightly judged and undoubtedly the best Chelsea player this season.
