Footballers say a lot of things to the press these days. Maybe to gain publicity, or praise someone or even criticise certain people. Whatever they say to the press, it definitely should be taken with a pinch of salt. The tabloids all over the Europe are known for twisting words to fit an article. They slightly exaggerate a statement or take things far too literally. What we can conclude from this is that if a player says one thing, it can often turn out to be wrong.
With Ashley Cole leaving in the summer, the Blues have conducted a quick search of Europe to find a suitable replacement. Although, a replacement isn’t too high on the list of priorities as Chelsea have Cesar Azpilicueta and Ryan Bertrand. However, the Express have linked the Stamford Bridge outfit with a move for Atletico Madrid star, Filipe Luis.
The Express have taken the angle that Luis is keen on staying at the new La Liga champions and Champions League finalists. This followed quotes from the player suggesting that he’s looking to see out the three years remaining on his contract.
But, taking into consideration what I said earlier about player comments, I think Chelsea should pursue Luis a little further. Perhaps a bid to test the player and club’s resolve. He is worth it after all.
He was voted, in many fan polls, as being the best left-back in the La Liga this season. This is mainly down to his ability to contribute in attack as much as he does in defence. Ever present at both ends of the field, he has great energy.
One of the more expensive players in the Madrid squad, however, he has more than proved his worth. Performing consistently in over 100 appearances for the club.
He could be a brilliant addition to the side and one which I think Jose Mourinho should explore despite his recent comments.
