A complicated situation has arisen at Chelsea this season. It’s not often you get a big team with misfiring strikers; especially not all three of them. Unfortunately for Jose Mourinho, that has been the case this season. He’s had to factor that into his decisions for the campaign which has seen him attract criticism, but he knows that his strikers aren’t good enough to use them as the focal point of the team. Instead the trio of attacking midfielders have led the way.
However, in today’s news, two strikers are being linked with a move away from the club. Samuel Eto’o, the top goal scorer out of all the strikers, has emerged as a surprise target for Tottenham Hotspur. While Romelu Lukaku, the most promising striker at the club, could be subject to a £20 million bid from Zenit St Petersburg. The Express are running both these stories
But, I think Chelsea shouldn’t be so hasty in cutting ties with Samuel Eto’o just yet as he has proved to be quite a useful player this season. 12 goals in a debut season, at the age of 33, in a new team and has just come from the Russian Premier League. A standard of football way below the Premier League.
Having only played 21 games in the Premier League, nine goals isn’t a bad tally; especially when you consider all the factors above that could have hindered him.
In my opinion, I don’t think Eto’o deserves to be a starting player but he does deserve to stay at Chelsea. He provided a realistic threat to the opposition with his desire to play off the shoulder of the last man. Fitting Eden Hazard’s, Oscar’s and Willian’s style.
The former Anzhi Makhachkala striker could be a great option from the bench next season and that’s why I think he should stay at Chelsea for at least another year.
