Top 5 defenders Who Could Replace David Luiz

The surprise story of the season has been the potential transfer of David Luiz to Paris Saint Germain in a deal worth £40 million. The whole footballing world has been left gob-smacked by the amount of money spent on a defender. Luiz will become the most expensive defender of all time should the transfer go through. However, there are some reports which suggest that the fee could be closer to £50 million. The Daily Mail are one of these outlets.

In my opinion, this is a win-win situation for Chelsea. Don’t get me wrong, David Luiz is a very good player and his key attribute is his versatility. However, he’s makes a lot of errors through lack of concentration. That’s his big problem. He will do everything right for most of the game, but then make the wrong pass and suddenly Chelsea have conceded.

The fact that Chelsea are receiving £40-£50 million for him is absolutely incredible. They can now use this money to buy any defender on the planet or put it to good use on the rest of the team. As I say, it’s a win-win for Jose Mourinho.

So here are five players that could replace the Brazilian:

1. Mats Hummels – The name is always present on these lists; when a top club are chasing a defender. There’s a reason for this though. The Borussia Dortmund star is an amazing defender as he fits the profile of a modern centre back. He can move along the ground at a fair rate of knots, good in the air and adaptable. However, Hummels is very injury prone which could be a deciding factor for Jose Mourinho.

2. Mehdi Benatia – The Roma centre-half has had an incredible season which has resulted in the Italian giants returning to play Champions League football next season. He was key to the team conceding just 25 goals, second best in the Serie A. Through his performances, a whole host of big teams are now chasing the Moroccan

3. Eliaquim Mangala – The Porto centre-back has been chased by Manchester City for a number of years now, but with Chelsea’s new found wealth they could snatch the Frenchman from right under the noses of the new Premier League champions. It would be wise if they did. Mangala, like Hummels, represents everything a modern centre-back is.

4. Marquinhos – The current PSG centre-back is already receiving limited game time for the French giants, now with the signing of David Luiz, he’ll receive even less. This could spark some transfer rumours, linking the 20-year-old away from the Ligue 1 champions. He’s a fantastic player that Mourinho could develop into a fine defender. Definitely should be considered as an option.

5. Curtis Davies – If Mourinho wanted to splash the cash on other positions and give Tomas Kalas and Kurt Zouma more established roles then bringing in Curtis Davies could be a smart move. He’ll provide back up to John Terry and Gary Cahill. The depth will be immense and plenty of experience for Zouma and Kalas to learn from.
