The sale of David Luiz has greatly increased Chelsea’s spending budget for the summer, making things a bit more legal for them to go out and splash £50 million on whoever they want. There are so many conflicting stories which either suggest that Jose Mourinho will directly replace Luiz or he’ll use the money to improve other areas of the team, the strike department in particular.
However, there are options that Chelsea can pursue in terms of replacing Luiz and not have to splash close to £30 million for. FourFourTwo have beautifully described Fabian Schar and his rise in European football as being a goal-scoring centre back. Obviously teams don’t look for goal in a centre back, but it is nice to know that they provide a danger at the other end. Nothing strikes fear into an opponent more than a defender who can score from set pieces. You just can’t do anything about it because they’re that good.
Schar is a player known for scoring goals as he has 14 in 73 appearances for Basel which is a very good tally for any defender. Most wouldn’t break into double digits in their whole career.
Looking at what FourFourTwo have said about the star, he seems to have a mature head on young shoulders. He reads the game very well and his composure in difficult situations has been heralded by a host of Swiss football experts. They also noted his aerial prowess at both ends which is a factor behind his ability to get goals.
Despite his strengths in front of goal, the experts were quick to praise his abilities as a defender for Basel and Switzerland and suggest that he could be a very important player at the World Cup.
