Letting Ashley Cole Go Would Be The Right Decision

There has been a lot of discussion this week about whether or not Chelsea should or should not offer Ashley Cole a new contract, it’s looking more unlikely now that Chelsea will offer the long serving left back a new contract. I have to agree with Mourinho that it is for the best to let Ashley Cole leave.

At one time there was no doubt that Cole was arguably the best left back in the world in his prime. He had everything that you would want in a left back. Excellent full back, which is very rare nowadays as it is more focused on attacking and providing support for the wingers than helping the defence. Cole was also very good at supporting the attack and provided a lot of assists for the likes of Didier Drogba in the season which the Blues scored 101 goals, Cole provided assists for 10 of the goals which, for a left back, is very impressive.

Unfortunately, as the years go on players decline and that is the same that has happened to Cole. The fact that he has probably had the worst year of his footballing career with him being dropped from the first team and replaced by an original right back now playing in his left back position.

As well as that, he also find out that he was not going to be involved in the 23 man squad that Roy Hodgson announced for the World Cup in Brazil. And to top things off, with him most likely to be leaving Chelsea in the summer, he will have to find a new club and more than likely take a wage cut in order to find a new club to take him.

Although Chelsea would be losing a left back, they could easily bring in a new left back to provide competition for Azpilicueta or to replace him and move him back to his favoured right back position. Chelsea have been linked with both Marcelo and Fabio Coentrao who are both very good left backs and both could be excellent additions to the Chelsea defence.
