The topsy-turvy season continued over the weekend as teams entered the busy Christmas period.
Goal of the weekend
West Bromwich Albion’s James Morrison‘s volley away to Blackburn Rovers. The midfielder took it first time from the edge of the box and sweetly tucked it past the diving Paul Robinson in goal – a typical Morrison goal.
Save of the weekend
Radek Cerny‘s sprawling save to deny Danny Welbeck. The second choice Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper done brilliantly to tip over Welbeck’s top corner effort and keep the score at a respectable 2-0. Not bad for a 37-year-old!
Club of the weekend
Tough choice but I’ll give it to Stoke City. After successfully qualifying past the Europa League group stages, the weary City side came from a goal down to earn all three points away to a battling Wolverhampton Wanderers side in need of points.
Player of the weekend
Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney. The striker headed United into the lead after just 53 seconds and increased his tally to 45 different Premier League teams in which he has scored past. He was brilliant upfront all match, creating chances both for himself and others, and in general he gave the QPR defence a torrid time. Promising signs ahead of Euro 2012.

Miss of the weekend
Tottenham Hotspur’s Luka Modric. The Croatian somehow side-footed the ball over the open goal as he followed up Emmanuel Adebayor’s parried effort. From all of nine yards, you would bet your house on the midfielder tucking that one away.
Worst decision of the weekend
Jonathan Woodgate not being shown two yellow cards against Wolves. The former Real Madrid player floored Matt Jarvis on both occasions and only received the one yellow card. However, the second challenge that went amiss did cost in a penalty to the hosts Wolves.
What went wrong?
Aston Villa had a poor game at home to Liverpool. With the news that key strikers Darren Bent and Gabriel Agbonlahor will both be missing the match due to different reasons, manager Alex McCleish had to settle with playing the forever talented Emile Heskey and youngster Nathan Delfouneso upfront. In addition to this news, Villa conceded both their goals from a corner; something they have constantly done over the season.
