Marco Van Basten has been highly tipped as the man to take up the vacant manager post at our club. When I first heard Van Basten could replace Carlo, I could not stop laughing.
I reassured myself that this rumor was similar to those linking Grant, Moyes and Redknapp to the managerial position at our club. I thought the rumor would die during the weekend but it seems to have grown strong. If our board is crazy enough to select Van Basten as our new manager, we will head to another trophy less season.
As a player, Van Basten was excellent. Basten had veracious appetite for goals. At the end of his career, he had scored 218 goals in 280 games. He has three Eredivisie and three Serie A titles to his name. He has already won the Champions League twice and the FIFA World Player of the Year once. It is a fact that very few players have or will be able to match his record.
The reason why I say no is to Van Basten taking up the manager job is that his record as a manager has not been impressive. Similar to the Maradona situation, Basten’s fame got him the Netherlands job in 2004. He had 69% win ratio as national manager. After 4 years as national manager, he tried his hand at club management.
He managed Ajax for one season and had a win ratio of 62% and Ajax failed to qualify for Champions League that season. Van Basten is still a trophy virgin as a manager. Our club needs a proper manager, one with a rich managerial CV. I will be happy if anyone of the following managers becomes our new manager: Guus Hiddink, Marcello Lippi, Fabio Capello, Trapattoni and Van Gaal.
