Newcastle ‘confident’ they can beat Chelsea to 21-year-old forward

Newcastle United are confident of beating Chelsea to sign Anthony Gordon

According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Newcastle United are confident that they have beaten Chelsea in the race to sign Everton winger Anthony Gordon.

Gordon is expected to travel to the northeast before the weekend and complete his move to the Magpies. Both Chelsea and Newcastle have had their bids rejected for the player by Everton in the summer. The former had a £45m offer refuted and the latter had a £35m offer pushed back.

It was reported a day ago that the Blues have rekindled their interest in the 21-year-old. The same goes with Newcastle now. And the Magpies are confident of making this deal happen and believe that Everton will agree to sell the player.

The report also says that if the Toffees do not come down on their £60m valuation of Gordon, Newcastle have other options on the table. They are interested in Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech as well.

With the January transfer window less than a week away from shutting down, it is going to be intense times for both clubs.

Having signed Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke this month, it would not be a big miss for Chelsea if Newcastle beat them to sign Gordon. Moreover, with how much money Everton value the player, it makes no sense to fork that much out for a player who has a few good months of performance under his belt.

We also have the likes of Christian Pulisic and loanee Callum Hudson-Odoi as options for the future.

After signing three attackers so far, the Blues are in the market for a midfielder. They are still in the race for Moises Caicedo despite seeing the opening bid rejected. The last 48 hours have seen them resurfacing their interest in Enzo Fernandez.

At the moment, we need to sign a midfielder more than anyone. There shouldn’t be any qualms about missing out on Gordon to Newcastle. We rather hope that this saga gets over so that we can focus on other targets.
