Chelsea looking to extend stay for veteran defender

Chelsea are set to start negotiations with defender David Luiz over a new contract, as per the Mirror.

The report further states that the Brazilian will be out of contract next summer and Chelsea want to keep him beyond this season.

The 31-year-old is now a regular starter under new Maurizio Sarri, implying his importance in the team.

Mirror reports that negotiations are expected to start soon so a deal can be struck before January. Provided we wait until winter, other clubs might get a chance to speak to the centre-back.

David Luiz

This is the Brazilian’s second spell at the club. He signed from Benfica in 2011, before joining Paris Saint-Germain. The defender returned to Stamford Bridge in 2016, winning the Premier League under Antonio Conte. Now, under Sarri, the 31-year-old is looking solid alongside Antonio Rudiger.

Luiz isn’t the fastest or the youngest defender out there but the Chelsea manager seems to prefer him over the likes of Gary Cahill and Andreas Christensen.

The Brazilian hasn’t made too many errors in this campaign thus far and a contract extension would be ideal for both parties.

It will be interesting to see whether Sarri starts him in the Europa League games. However, for now, Luiz is undroppable for Chelsea.
