Why Chelsea Can Be A Major Defensive Force Next Season Under Conte

Chelsea supporters are in for a surprise from their new manager as the new ideas that the new gaffer will implement are sure to sweep them off their floors. Antonio Conte is no doubt a genius and Chelsea have taken a right step to bounce back after a horrific season. The Euros is a good opportunity for the fans to get acquainted with Conte’s tactics and the first game against Belgium was a perfect platform to see how Conte works with his players.

Italy’s squad is considered to be their one of the worst in the last 50 years and the injuries to Marco Verratti and Claudio Marchisio have totally dented the Azzuri’s chances. Still, coming up against one of the tournament’s favourites, Conte devised such a system that completely negated the threat from the so called golden generation of Belgium. Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne were pressed and not given any space to do damage whatsoever.

The 3-5-2 formation is not perceived well in England but it seems Conte is going to change that when he takes over at the Bridge. Against Belgium, when going forward, Conte played an attacking 3-3-4 formation, with Darmian and Candreva joining the strikers to provide width and more options. While defending, these fullbacks came back and defended like in the old school English game, the typical 4-4-2 type. This boded well and the three centre back trio of Barzagi, Bonucci and Chiellini had all the time in the world to work their way forward and pumped long balls when needed.

Chelsea can play like this in big games and can churn out results like Azzuri did. With no European competitions next campaign, Conte will have loads of time to implement his strategies and get them through to the squad. The blues need to buy centre backs to increase the strength and to play three at the back, Chelsea will need atleast five centre backs to compete the defense department.

If we guess the lineup, Terry, Zouma and a new signing can be the three centre backs ahead of Courtois. With Azpilicueta and Willian on the wings, the blues will have the much needed energy to move up and down on the flanks and also with Zouma, Blues will have the speed to contain on the counter attacks. Antonio Conte provided a tactical masterclass against Belgium and this can become the norm at Stamford Bridge from next season if the players get used to the Italian’s tactics as quickly as possible.
