Wigan 1 Chelsea 1 – Two points dropped

Daniel Sturridge looked to have won the three points for Chelsea but Jordi Gomez’s late equaliser put an end to that.

The late goal was a huge blow to the Blues, after beating City they would have wanted and expected to continue their winning run.

As for Wigan, it gave them a crucial point, especially as all the teams around them had lost earlier in the day.

Sturridge’s goal came midway through the second half when Ashley Cole passed to the England striker after seeing him make his run, having controlled the ball he scored with his weaker right-foot – His fourth goal in five league games.

The Latics could be forgiven for feeling that they should have had a penalty in the first-half when Victor Moses’ shot hit Branislav Ivanovic’s arm but nothing was given.

They got their justice in two minutes from time when Petr Cech failed to hold Hugo Rodallega’s shot and a grateful Gomez was there to tap it in.

The Blues stay third, and are six points behind leaders Manchester City, they face fifth placed Arsenal on Sunday – both teams have a game in hand of the London club.

Next up is a tricky away game at Spurs who have impressed a lot this season and then they host Fulham on Boxing Day.
